Driving in Winter

Are there any special precautions I should take when driving in icy conditions?

In icy conditions it is essential that you drive much more carefully than normal. Slow down as soon as you are aware of ice, steer gently and avoid harsh braking.

Keep in the highest gear you can and if you have to brake use short even applications rather than heavy sustained pressure.

What about driving in the snow?

When it is snowing one of the main problems is poor visibility, so always use dipped headlights. Drive as in icy conditions, taking particular care to watch for snowdrifts or irregular accumulations caused by snow ploughing operations.

Keep a look out for abandoned vehicles, and pedestrians walking in the carriageway.

What about the winter sun?

The winter sun is low in the sky and can dazzle when reflected off either a wet road or snow.

In these conditions reduce your speed to a minimum, keep your windscreen clear and use your sun visor.
