THE THREE RIVERS FISHERY
This advice from the Council, compliments the controls on cockle gathering that are applied by Welsh Government’s Fisheries Unit.
• Only gather shellfish when it’s safe to do so.
The Three Rivers Fishery has a large tidal range, with strong tides and currents and areas of very soft sand. It also forms part of two Defence Infrastructure Organisation ranges and when they are operational, access to the Fishery will be denied and cockle gathering cannot take place.
• Always follow the byelaws.
Cockle gathering in the Three Rivers Fishery is controlled by byelaws enforced by Officers of Welsh Government’s Fisheries Unit. The byelaws must be followed at all times and always look for changes in the byelaws that might affect your gathering activities.
• Protect the Fishery
The Three Rivers Fishery provides some very special habitats for a wide range of wildlife and shellfish gatherers have a key role to play in their protection. Some of those habitats are protected in law and that means that cockle gathering cannot take place, unless specific permission to do so is granted.
• Some ‘Do’s’
Always ask the landowner for permission to park your car or van locally and for access onto the beach area.
Keep the gathering areas clean and litter free at all times.
Use portaloo toilets or local public conveniences before going onto the shellfish beds.
• Some ‘Don’t’s’
Never take your vehicle off-road or onto the shellfish beds.
Camping on the ‘Green’ at Llansteffan is prohibited.
Never access the ranges when firing or testing is taking place.
