Right to buy

Carmarthenshire County Council has decided to apply for suspension of the Right to Buy for Council houses, using new powers from the Welsh Government.

The number of families looking for housing from the Council and housing associations outnumbers the number of lettings each year by a ratio of 9 to 1. [Namely 7883 families: 914 lettings].  In Wales as a whole, this ratio is between 4 to 1 and 5 to 1, so Carmarthenshire’s shortage of affordable rented homes is a lot worse than the Welsh average.

This will involve an application to Welsh Government.  We also need to show that we have policies in place that will sustain and create affordable homes for sale and rent for our residents.’

Wider consultation will take place with tenants and other stakeholders before making the formal application.
