Housing Adaptations

If your home doesn’t suit your needs, there are various options available that could help you live more independently.

Adapting your home

Adapting homes that are suited to the specific needs of the people who live in them is important.

It means that with the right kind of home, someone with a disability or mobility problem can continue to enjoy living independently, or if you need help from a carer, an adaptation may make it easier for them to help you.

Adaptations for Council Tenants

If you are a Council tenant, you can apply to us to adapt your home. Applications for this work must meet certain criteria.

For more information about home adaptations, contact the Home Improvement Team in the first instance.

Adaptations for home owners and people who rent privately

If you own or rent your home, you may apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to help you adapt your home.  We will look at your income and savings before we give you a disabled facilities grant.  However, if you need to adapt your home for a child under 16, we will not base our decision on your income.

The most we can give you is £30, 000.  We will look at your income (if this applies) when you first apply.
