Supporting People Strategy 2008-11
Director of Social Care, Health and Housing Bruce McLernon

Carmarthenshire has launched its new three-year strategy for providing good quality supported housing for vulnerable people in the county. The Supporting People Strategy 2008-11 has been approved for publication by Carmarthenshire County Council members following public consultation on the draft strategy between February and April this year.

The Strategy has been launched by Director of Social Care, Health and Housing Bruce McLernon and Supporting People Champion Cllr Hugh Evans at the Supporting People Planning Group meeting on 5th November 2008.

Director of Social Care, Health and Housing Bruce McLernon said: “The Strategy sets out how the council, with its partners, will provide housing related support to a broad range of residents who will benefit from it to assist them to live independently in their own homes.”

Supporting People Champion Cllr Hugh Evans said: “This Strategy sets out the achievements, what we are going to do and how we are going to go about it.

“The main message is that everyone in Carmarthenshire will receive the housing related support they need to maintain a stable platform in their lives from which they can fulfil their true potential, improve their quality of life and allow them to become valued members of their communities.”

This is the first strategy for the Supporting People Team in Carmarthenshire and aims to set out how the direction of the Supporting People programme will be delivered during the next three years.

Priorities for development of new services in the Strategy include support for ex-offenders, people with substance misuse problems, people who are visually impaired, older persons housing related support services, and housing related support links for young carers.

The Strategy has been developed in consultation with those providing and using the services and will identify the housing related support needs in the county to guide future service provision.

It also sets the scene of local public services and the environment the programme operates in and describes how the programme will continue to work in partnership with colleagues across statutory, non-statutory and voluntary organisations.

To ensure the effective implementation of the Strategy, the Supporting People Team has developed an Implementation Plan, which describes how it will be funded and carried out.

This Plan will be reviewed and monitored regularly. There will be regular updates of the Implementation Plan on this website, and in newsletters.
