In affiliation with Nightstop UK, Trothwy Cyf is operating an innovative scheme called Carmarthenshire Nightstop, aimed at tackling youth homelessness in Carmarthenshire.
Carmarthenshire is only the second county in Wales to set up such an innovative project, though there are several Nightstop schemes in England that have been successfully operating for many years under the banner of Nightstop UK.
Nightstop aims to provide young people, aged 16 to 25, with access to safe, secure, emergency accommodation in the home of approved volunteer hosts, where they can have a bed for the night as well as an evening meal and breakfast.
The accommodation is for one to three nights and allows the young person to have some breathing space to take stock of their situation and consider their options, should they find themselves unable to return home.
It is really not suitable to place vulnerable young people, who are often afraid about what will happen to them, in bed and breakfast or hostel type accommodation, and this scheme will provide a much safer, warm comfortable alternative.
Any person, with a room to spare in their home and a concern for young people, can become a host (subject to a free CRB check). Nightstop will provide training, expenses and a very high level of support to hosts to ensure that neither they, nor the young people, are at any risk of harm.
Nightstop is continually looking to recruit new volunteer hosts to enable the scheme to support more young people. The success of the scheme is reliant on the support of both existing hosts and new potential hosts coming forward.
If you would like to support Nightstop UK either by becoming a host or by volunteering some spare time please contact Carmarthenshire Nightstop at:
