Making a Sustainable County

At the Annual Carmarthenshire Partnership Forum in 2007, public sector and community leaders from across Carmarthenshire signed up to a more sustainable future for the county.

Representatives of the Local Service Board (County Council, NHS Trust, Local Health Board, Dyfed-Powys Police, the Environment Agency, Trinity College, Coleg Sir Gâr, Carmarthenshire Association of Voluntary Services and community organisations) all signed a Declaration to make Carmarthenshire a more sustainable county.

The Forum was addressed by Jonathon Porritt (Forum for the Future and chair of the Sustainable Development Commission) who spoke about the challenge of climate change.

Carmarthenshire’s Environment Partnership has been given responsibility for overseeing the Local Service Board's declaration of intent "to make Carmarthenshire a more sustainable county."

The Local Service Board is made up of 8 main partner organisations and each of them have committed to the 5 themes of the declaration:

  1. Save Resources: Minimise the unnecessary use of resources by reducing, reusing and recycling waste
  2. Save Energy: Reduce energy use and become more energy efficient
  3. Travel Wisely: Reduce the need for the transport of both people and goods
  4. Shop Ethically: Buy Fairtrade and locally produced goods
  5. Care For Your Area: Conserve and enhance buildings and natural environment

Each LSB partner has further agreed to measure progress in reducing its impacts; work in partnership to raise awareness of sustainable development issues amongst its staff and communities; and, report progress annually to the Carmarthenshire Partnership Annual Forum.
