Primary Free Breakfast Initiative
23/02/2011

Carmarthenshire Catering Service provides a Free Breakfast Initiative and has the highest participation in the whole of Wales. There are currently 100 primary schools taking part in the scheme across the County.

Breakfast is recognized as the most important meal of the day and evidence shows that a healthy breakfast is linked to better health, concentration and behavior in our schools.

It is vital that we eat breakfast as without it we do not perform to the best of our ability. Breakfast helps to kick start the body and fuel the brain after hours of sleep. During the night we use energy which we need to restore as soon as possible after waking in the morning to ensure the best start to the day. Breakfast Club

The majority of Carmarthenshire primary schools run a breakfast club which opens at 8am. Pupils can choose from a range of options for breakfast.

An example of our menu is as follows;

A choice of non-coated sugar cereals such as; Rice Krispies, Shreddies, Cornflakes or Weetabix

Variety of fruit

Fruit juice or milk to drink

(Please note, at times there may be a slight variance in our breakfast menu)

It has been proven that those who eat breakfast have better general health, higher concentration levels and behave better in school than those who skip this important meal. Breakfast Club

Not only does Carmarthenshire County Council offer a healthy breakfast but also organizes competitions, themed breakfasts throughout the year and encourages pupils to socialize together during the session.  As a Council we are offering a free service giving children the opportunity to have a great start to the school day!

Special dietary requiremants are catered for. Please contact the Department for Education and Children on 01267 246537 for any further information.
