School Admissions and Transfers

school children

Admission to School is not an automatic process and there is a requirement for parents and carers to submit an application to an Admissions Authority by a specified date.

For Community (formerly known as County schools) and for Voluntary Controlled Schools the Admission Authority is Carmarthenshire County Council and not the individual school.

There are different arrangements for Voluntary Aided Schools where the Admission Authority is the Governing Body of the individual school and you should contact the school directly in relation to admission enquiries or applications.

The deadline date for the receipt of applications for admission to a nursery and primary schools applications is the 31st January in the school year before the child is due to start school. Applications received after that date will be treated as being late and will be considered after those received on or before the 31st January.

For pupils transferring from the primary to the secondary sector then the deadline date for the return of the relevant forms is the 3rd February for pupils transferring in the September of that same year. Applications received after the deadline date will only be considered after those received before the deadline date

Not getting a place at a school of the parent’s choice can be very upsetting and distressing for the both the parents and the child.

To assist parents and carers and to maximise the possibility of obtaining a place at a  school the Authority has developed an online application form accompanied supported by  documentation to guide parents through the application process. The links are provided on the top right hand side of this page

The system will also allow parents to make application for admission to a nursery or primary school for up to five years in advance which will assist schools and the Authority with the forward planning. Whilst early application will not guarantee or give priority to an application it will ensure they meet the deadline date.

I very much hope that you will find the information provided to be of assistance to you and may I take this opportunity to thank you for your interest and say that as an Authority we look forward to welcoming your son or daughter to one of our schools and wish them every success in their studies.

Please remember the following deadline dates

( i) Nursery and Primary Schools  - January 31st

(ii) Secondary Transfers -  February 3rd
