Once the Form F is completed, you will be asked to read and sign it. If there is anything that you do not agree with, you can discuss it with the social worker.
The social worker will change factual errors but may not be able to alter aspects of the assessment of your skills and abilities.
However, in the event that you continue to disagree with what has been written, you will be given the opportunity to write your own comments, which will be taken into account by the
Fostering Panel.
You are asked to attend the Panel and will be able to discuss any issues with them. The Panel consists of ten members, some from Carmarthen and a number of independent members. The report will be circulated to the members prior to the Panel date.
On the day of the Panel, members will speak to your social worker first, after which you will be invited in. Although the number of Panel members can be intimidating, they will make you feel as comfortable as possible. The panel may ask you questions about the assessment report, where they require clarification.
The assessing social worker will also be present to give you any support you need. When the Panel has all the information that they require, you will be asked to leave the room and they will make their recommendation about whether or not they think you should be approved as a foster carer.
Occasionally, they may request the social worker to have further discussions with you before recommending approval, in which case the application will be deferred until the next Panel (usually the following month).
The Panel recommendation is then confirmed by the Head of Children’s Services. After you have been approved you will be transferred to the Fostering Support Team and allocated a supervising social worker, from whom you will receive ongoing support. Your supervising social worker will ensure that you receive equipment (beds, bedding etc) and information which will allow you to start your fostering career.
If you have any queries about any aspect of the assessment you can contact the Fostering Recruitment Team on 01267 224228.
