Genesis supports women to take their first steps towards a new career

Genesis Advisor Emma Hughes and Coleg Sir Gâr lecturers Susan Richards and June Garland with Genesis participants who have complA group of women have taken their first steps towards a rewarding career in childcare.
Supported by Genesis, the women have completed a four-week taster course in childcare at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig campus.
For some, it was their first introduction to the college environment.

They have been so inspired by the taster that many of them have now signed up for the full course, which starts in September, with a view to becoming qualified and ready to enter employment – or even starting up their own business.
Genesis, based within Carmarthenshire County Council, is a European Social Funded project which aims to improve life for families by providing support to remove any barriers that have prevented them from accessing training, education or employment.
Genesis Advisor Emma Hughes, said: “A number of our participants had expressed an interest in childcare, and as such we worked in partnership with Coleg Sir Gar to facilitate a four week introduction course which covered issues such as the basic values and principles of childcare, and how children learn.
“It was great to be able to give them an insight into the world of Childcare, in a practical and interactive way, preparing many of them for college courses and a future career in the industry.”
June Garland, a Health and Social Care tutor at Coleg Sir Gâr, said: “The girls who attended showed a great level of commitment and actively took part in all tasks and discussions. They came to the course displaying a positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.”
Genesis can provide support through many avenues such as sign posting, advice and guidance, training, education, volunteering, childcare, self-esteem and confidence building, parenting, counselling and financial assistance to access training, employment, education and volunteering.
