Heol Goffa Centre 

The Day Centre specialises in providing a service for adults with learning and physical disabilities.

The Centre was opened in 1972 for people with learning disabilities under the name ‘Adult Training Centre’. It became known as the Social Activity Centre in the early 1990’s and following the restructuring of services in 2005 the service was renamed ‘Heol Goffa Centre’.

Facilities

There is a fully fitted kitchen, which is used to teach service users domestic skills and participate in cookery sessions. The kitchen has a specially designed height adjustable sink unit and hob.

Therapeutic art and craftwork is an integral part of the centre’s activities.

Music Therapy is an important part of peoples’ lives and is particularly useful and enjoyable for people with learning disabilities. Music stimulates the senses and can also be used for relaxation purposes.

The centre has a two Sensory Rooms, one white and a dark room,  fitted with specialist equipment, which can be used for both stimulation and relaxation purposes.  There is a ball pool with overhead hoist system making it accessible for wheelchair users. Service Users can also enjoy an enclosed garden area and conservatory for relaxation.

Computer Suite — with adaptations and software designed fro people with learning disabilities, in order to facilitate learning new skills and for creative art.

All staff are trained in Total Communication which uses sign language ‘Signalong’, objects of reference, use of signs on doors and group activities.  Service Users participate in Total Communication groups, improving communication skills.

Among the variety of activities & therapies offered are:

  • Reflexology undertaken by a qualified reflexologist in weekly sessions.
  • Rebound therapy at the Llanelli Leisure centre using the trampoline.
  • Hydrotherapy at theGlangwili Hospital, Carmarthen with professional support.
