Council Tax

The Council Tax is a tax set by local councils to help pay for the services provided in your area.

Council Tax is the current form of local taxation for domestic properties which local authorities use to raise money to pay for around 20% of the cost of local services such as Education, Social Services, Refuse Collection and so on.

Councils receive their income from three main sources:

  • National Assembly for Wales - Revenue Support Grant.
  • Local Residents - Council Tax.
  • Local Businesses - Non Domestic Rates (redistributed by the National Assembly for Wales)

Council Tax is a property tax with a personal element. The property element is based on the property's valuation band. The personal element takes into account the number of people aged over 18 living in a property, and allows for a discount to be granted in some circumstances.

Please Note:

Certain Council Tax information may be shared with other organisations, such as government departments and local authorities, e.g. for verification purposes, as allowed by the law, and with other Council Departments for the purposes of carrying out statutory services.
