Funding and Grants 

There are a number of funding schemes aimed at improving the development of sport and physical activity to clubs/organisations and individuals within Carmarthenshire. The information below details the grants available that are administered by the Local Authority.

Funding for Clubs / Organisations

Clubs/organisations can apply for funding through –

  • Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sport & Leisure Grant  - clubs/organisations  -
  • Sports Council for Wales SPORTLOT Community Chest Grant

Funding for Individuals

Individuals who represent Wales and/or Great Britain can apply for funding through -

  • Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sport & Leisure Grant - individuals
  • Carmarthenshire County Council’s Gold Card Scheme

Funding for Clubs/Organisation

Clubs/organisations can apply for funding through –

  • Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sport & Leisure Grant for clubs/organisations  -

1. Minor facility improvement

  • Grants will only be allocated to clubs/associations that have made applications to improve their sporting/recreational facilities.  No grant will be given to a club that is improving its social facilities.

2. Hosting an event

  • Grants will be considered for sporting events, which will be held within the County of Carmarthenshire and will enhance the profile of the County.  (New or first time events will be referred to SPORTLOT Community chest in the first instance).

3. Enhancing existing sports development programme (if not eligible for community chest funding)

  • Grants will be considered if the project results in –
  • Increased membership/participation
  • An increase in frequency of participation (as a guide 5 x 30 minutes of moderate exercise per week for an adult and 5 x 60 minutes for a child)
  • Increased number of volunteers/coaches
  • The creation of additional partnership working

4. Disability Sport Organisations

  • Seeking financial assistance in order for a team of athletes to compete in competitions
  • Seeking financial assistance for the organisation of a Sporting Event in Carmarthenshire, which will enhance the profile of the County and will lead to an increase in the participation in that particular sport.
  • Performance squad training for a maximum of 20 weeks (only one application can be submitted). Participants must reside in Carmarthenshire or attend a school or sports club in Carmarthenshire

Sports Council for Wales SPORTLOT Community Chest Grant

The SPORTLOT Community Chest Scheme, administered locally by the Council is designed to support the development of sport and physical activity in the community.

Purpose of the Scheme…

The scheme is intended to make a difference to local sport and support activities which will create new or improved sport and physical activity opportunities that are additional to what is already in place and would not be able to happen without a grant. The scheme is intended to support sport and physical activity projects which:

Encourage more people to become physically active more often

  • Create, increase and improve participation
  • Contribute to lifelong participation
  • Contribute to Wales becoming a healthier and more inclusive nation Encourage volunteers and community champions by developing new leaders, coaches & officials
  • Encourage partnerships with other agencies involved with health improvement, physical activity, community development, community safety, social inclusion, regeneration & renewal

What can be funded?

Innovative and imaginative new ideas are encouraged. The following list provides an indication of the kinds of projects which could be eligible

  • Walking or cycling projects
  • Projects encouraging employees to become more physically active
  • Recruitment and development of volunteers, leaders and coaches
  • Projects which encourage older people to be more physically active
  • New group, club or team start-up costs
  • Developing new competitive sporting opportunities
  • Developing club/community to school links
  • Extending existing sport clubs to provide for new activities and members.
  • Up to £1000 is available to organisations to develop their projects.

Funding for Individuals

Funding is available to individuals who represent Wales and/or Great Britain at their chosen sport.
Eligibility-
1. Applicant must reside in Carmarthenshire, OR
2. Applicant attends a school in Carmarthenshire, OR
3. Applicant is a member of a Sports Club in Carmarthenshire, providing financial assistance is not available from applicant’s County of residence AND
4. Applicant must participate in one of the eligible sports AND
5. Applications must be received by Carmarthenshire County Council prior to the athlete attending the event/competition

Funding is available through:

1. Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sport & Leisure Grant - Individuals
Financial assistance can be sort for able bodied and disabled athletes who incur travel expenses when attending training sessions/competitions and purchase of equipment. See below for further guidelines.
2. Carmarthenshire County Council’s Gold Card Scheme
The scheme offers free access to facilities within a Carmarthenshire County Council's Leisure Centre relating to their training needs. See download for further information.

Applications must be accompanied by a selection letter from a recognised National Governing Body. This letter must clearly state that the athlete has been selected to represent Wales / Great Britain within the last 6 months.
